Cross Referencing

Cross-referencing a scripture to another has a magical power that can imaginatively criss-cross ones heart to heaven.

eg. 2 Nephi 4:15
"delighteth"
Moses 6:59

Parables Found

Just as important lessons can be learned by observing the behavior of cheetahs and topis, so each of us should look for the lessons and warnings found in the simple events of everyday life. As we seek for a mind and heart open to receive heavenly direction by the power of the Holy Ghost, then some of the greatest instructions that we can receive and many of the most powerful warnings that can safeguard us will originate in our own ordinary experiences. Powerful parables are contained in both the scriptures and in our daily lives.

Be Careful

"There are forces at play today designed to deliberately lead us away from absolute truth.  These deceptions and lies go far beyond innocent mistaken identity and often have dire, not minor, consequences."
Elder Gary E. Stevenson

New Book Title "Every Good Thing"

Such probing questions are often found in scripture- authors in the Book of Mormon use this technique (bibical scholar training) to push the student/reader- to cause further personal investigation, research and reflection. And creates the student/reader to pose questions, perhaps to the Lord or to an angel in return.  Nephi had similar questions to what his father taught of the Tree of Life, and asked his father and an angel of what these sacred things meant.  We should follow a similar pattern. Elder Soares stated, "our actions should reflect what we learn and teach".  In Moroni 7:20 "how is it possible that ye can lay hold upon every good thing?" Moroni spells out the answer in the remaining verses of the chapter.  I love verse 28 in his teaching of "every good thing", "for he hath answered the ends of the law, and he claimeth all those who have faith in him; and they cleave unto every good thing; wherefore he advocateth the cause of the children of men; and he dwelleth eternally in the heavens".

This verse has clearly inference to the Tree of Life (cleave usage, like unto the rod of iron)- Moroni reflecting on words of Lehi and Nephi towards the end of his writings.

Pure And Spotless Before God

The 16 Stones in the Book of Ether, how they illuminated the vessels of the Jaredites through the darkness of the deep, in the front and back of the ship? Could this be like "someone" needing such similar like stones to carry them through some of life's sometimes dark days, beyond and behind our sometimes mis-objected view? or they even perhaps, being a guide through life's like lands of Nimrod, Moricomer, across the sea to the promised land? Is it like Neal Maxwell's comment on the obedience of the 7th commandment, as a lamp to our path ahead, and blessings from therein obeying the law? Can we identify maybe 16 or more shining gems promised, from his book "Not Withstanding My
Weakness" chapter?! Yes, #6 Being Pure and Spotless Before God.

Instincts

Reading scripture can develop comparative instincts. Such instincts cause increased review, or even applified study of scripture power and purpose.  You can use comparative practice in reading the first part of the Book of Ether in the Book of Mormon, how? by finding interesting facts about the brother of Jared and comparing events or things about Jesus Christ.  eg. favored, 1:34; gather flocks, sheep, seed, 1:40-43; visited Lord in a cloud, 2:4-5. More can be found.

Pioneer Child

Sister Vilate C. Raile penned these words "Pioneers":

They cut desire into short lengths,
And fed it to the hungry fires of tribulation.
Long after when the fires had died,
Molten gold gleamed in the ashes.
They gathered it in bruised palms
And handed it to their children, And
their children's children forever.

Gushing

“Then Jesus beholding him loved him.”
As I heard these words, a vivid image filled my mind of our Lord pausing and beholding this young man. Beholding—as in looking deeply and penetratingly into his soul, recognizing his goodness and also his potential, as well as discerning his greatest need. Mark Palmer- conference message 2019

Highlighting words in a verse can deepen ones understanding of scriptural meanings.

"and their hearts were swollen with joy unto the gushing out of many tears" 3 Nephi 4:33

gushing, to rush or flow over someone

Vivid Images

“After hearing Jesus recite the commandments and the young man reply that he had observed all these since his youth, I listened for the Savior’s gentle correction: “One thing thou lackest: … sell whatsoever thou hast, and … come, … follow me.” But to my astonishment, I instead heard six words before that part of the verse that I seemed never to have heard or read before. It was as if they had been added to the scriptures. I marveled at the inspired understanding which then unfolded.”

Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.”

Six words?

"After hearing Jesus recite the commandments and the young man reply that he had observed all these since his youth, I listened for the Savior’s gentle correction: “One thing thou lackest: … sell whatsoever thou hast, and … come, … follow me.” But to my astonishment, I instead heard six words before that part of the verse that I seemed never to have heard or read before. It was as if they had been added to the scriptures. I marveled at the inspired understanding which then unfolded.” Palmer, 2019

Often a verse before or after the scripture can carry further meaning and inspiration.

Conference Messages

An important part in your personal study is to take note of identified conference talks in the material.  These talks give inspired insights into current application of the material.  For example: Come Follow Me,  May 13-19, See also S. Mark Palmer "Then Jesus beholding Him Loved Him". From this talk:

"One day while driving through the beautiful rolling wheat fields on the Washington-Idaho border, I was listening to a recording of the New Testament".

Listening to the scriptures in your car can provide quality study time as well.

Elevated Understanding

A powerful tool to elevate our understanding of a message from a speaker is too review their source data, their footnotes.

,a Stone,

23 And the Lord said: I will prepare unto my servant Gazelem, a stone, which shall shine forth in darkness unto light, that I may discover unto my people who serve me, that I may discover unto them the works of their brethren, yea, their secret works, their works of darkness, and their wickedness and abominations.
Alma 37:
